hum·ble
ˈhəmbəl/
adjective
  1. having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance.

This definition of humble almost sounds like being humble is a bad thing. Humility is the act of being modest, respectful, and politely submissive. It is the opposite of aggression, arrogance, pride, and vanity. On the surface, it appears that people that are humble are powerless or are giving up their power but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s important to stay humble.

People respond well to humility because it shows that you place yourself at the same level as others, and not above them.We all know that one person that thinks they are the stronger, smarter, and better than everyone else and we usually don’t want to spend much time around them.

A low estimate of one’s importance makes it sound like someone showing humility doesn’t recognize their own importance. Humble people know they’re important but they also recognize the importance of others. When you’re humble you’re free from the desire to impress, to be right, or to get ahead. Humble people are better able to manage anxiety and frustrations and losses have less impact on a humble person.

Humble people place less emphasis on “self” and in today’s “selfie” society, showing humility is more important than ever. A humble life results in contentment, patience, forgiveness, and compassion. It soothes the soul and helps you develop more self-control. When you’re humble you own who you are and recognize when you need help from others and you’re not afraid to ask for help. When you’re humble all human life matters and you respect everyone’s opinion even when you don’t agree because agreeing to disagree can be the beginning of a conversation.  In this instance, you listen and speak less and you seek to understand others point of view. That’s not having a low estimate of your worth, it’s recognizing other people’s worth as well. When you’re humble, you’re helpful and you seek to uplift others and joy is found in helping others grow and succeed. In humility, there are only winners. Being humble is key to a successful life.
