Math @ Work| Fashion

Here’s a great webisode to introduce to students the connections between STEM and fashion. So often fashion is thought of as “not serious” but that thought is so very wrong. Fashion design involves a great deal of math from making patterns to fitting a garment. Math is involved on the retail and business side of fashion as well. Designers must understand the fabric that they plan to use and that requires some knowledge of textile science. And now days more design is done on the computer and electronics and computers are being integrated into clothing. Fashion is STEM!

Check out this great series called Math @ Work with an appearance in the fashion webisode from Project Runway’s Tim Gunn.

In what ways do think STEM and art careers overlap? How would you incorporate STEM into you fashion lessons?
